A WEEK AMONG THE MAYA WELCOME TO MEXICO

The Yucatan makes for one of the most rewarding destinations in all of the Americas, owing to the legacies of some of the most influential and famous civilizations of the ancient world. In Chichen Itza, the archaeological remains of the Maya and the Toltecs give valuable insight into the lives and lifestyles of these fascinating societies of old and the still-standing remnants of temples, columns and monuments serve as testimony to their mathematical and astronomic prowess. On our journey from Merida, via Uxmal and on to Tulum, we experience some of the most beautiful landscapes in the whole of Mexico and scrambling over awe-inspiring temple-pyramid ruins that are partially shrouded by thick Yucatan jungle only adds authenticity to our journey into a distant and magical past

ITINERARY IN BRIEF

Day 1 • Arrive in Cancun, Mexico.

Day 2 • Travel by road to Chichen Itza, a wonderful archaeological site incorporating the ruins of two different cultures, the Maya and the Toltecs.

Day 3 • To Merida, probably the most beautiful town in the Yucatan peninsula. Afternoon carriage ride.

Day 4 • To Uxmal, Kabah and Labna. Overnight at Uxmal.

Day 5 • Continue to Coba—ancient temples surrounded by the thick Yucatan jungle. Explore by mountain bike and watch the sunset from the highest pyramid.

Day 6 • Early start for Tulum (to beat the crowds and the heat!)—afternoon on the beach.

Day 7 • Transfer back to Cancun airport for homeward flights, or extend at your favourite resort.

OUT FACTOR

The Latin/Catholic influence has limited the development of a gay community in Mexico, even though gay activity flourishes in a less acknowledged way. While the Yucatan is much more low-key than resorts on the Pacific coast, towns like Merida have long been known for their tolerance. The city has a strong Catholic influence, but its history of trade with Europe is believed to have led to its generally progressive attitude. That said, most locals are not particularly comfortable with in-your-face public displays of affection, gay or straight. Cancun, and less-so Tulum, are, of course, well-established gay resort destinations, and many of our travellers choose to extend their stay at their favourite resort.
