WELCOME TO TANZANIA

Tanzania, the largest nation in East Africa, is without doubt one of the most exciting countries in the world. In fact, the Serengeti itself is so vast that you can drive for an entire day and not encounter any other human being. Other safari destinations can’t offer this kind of experience to travellers, not anymore; Tanzania still can. Tanzania is classic Africa—The Great Rift Valley, Ngorongoro Crater, Maasai homelands and the celebrated plains of the Serengeti—and the country’s wildlife parks and reserves are unrivalled for their abundance of wildlife. Ngorongoro serves both as stunning ecological phenomenon and as home to a host of animals, including the ‘Big Five’ as well as astonishing birdlife, where the Serengeti, now synonymous with the term ‘safari’, is a land of superlatives that boasts more abundance and diversity of wildlife than anywhere on the planet.

ITINERARY IN BRIEF

Day 1 • Arrival in Arusha’s Kilimanjaro International Airport.

Day 2 • Drive to Lake Manyara located at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment; afternoon game drive in the National Park.

Day 3 • We descend onto the Serengeti Plain, a land of superlatives, both in the vast landscape that surrounds you and the incredible biodiversity it supports. Afternoon game drive.

Day 4 • A full day of game viewing on the Serengeti. We visit the "kopjes," a series of low, hills dotting the open landscape that often provide a vantage point for hungry predators contemplating the endless stream of hoofed animals parading past them.

Day 5 • Another full day in the Serengeti, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Day 6 • We stop at Olduvai Gorge, site of the Leakey excavations in the 1970’s en route to Ngorongoro Conservation Area, boasting a blend of landscapes, wildlife, people and archaeology that is unsurpassed in Africa.

Day 7 • Morning game drive and picnic lunch in the crater; continue to the Ngorongoro Highlands.

Day 8 • Excursion to Lake Eyasi to visit with the Hadza and Watindiga ethnic groups.

Day 9 • Travel to Tarangire National Park, known for its stately Baobab trees and interesting migratory animals.

Day 10 • Full day to discover Tarangire, probably one of the least visited of the northern Tanzanian game parks, retaining a real air of undiscovered Africa.

Day 11 • Early morning walking safari before breakfast. Drive to Arusha with time to enjoy our hotel or visit the Arusha market.

Day 12 • Departure from Arusha.

ACCOMMODATION
Hotels and lodges used are 4/5 star properties with hot water, electricity, mosquito netting, dining areas, bar, swimming pools. Remote lodges are not air-conditioned though many are at higher elevations where heat is not a factor. Hotel porter service is available throughout . Single rooms are limited in number and likely smaller than twins. Many lodges are quite spread out and you will need to be able to walk up to 10 minutes from public areas to your room.

TRANSPORT & TRAVEL CONDITIONS
Some road journeys are very long and very rough, possibly dusty. We travel via well-maintained, rugged 4WD vehicles. The same vehicles, with roofs that pop up, will be used for our game drives in parks and reserves. Please note that air-conditioned safari vehicles are non-existent in East Africa.

WEATHER/SEASONALITY
This tour is offered throughout the year except during the "long rains" in April and May when travel and game viewing can be less than optimal. Nov-Jan "short rains" when landscapes are green and many animals are giving birth. Feb / Mar post-short rains with many migratory birds from Europe though high grass can make game spotting a challenge. June-Aug coincides with the coolest and driest period, though also the busiest and most expensive due to European holiday period. Sept / Oct is often hot and dusty though game viewing is excellent due to short grass and animals congregating around water sources.
